Personal Statement


It was late 1989 and I remember that distinctly because it was the summer Tim Burtons Batman came out, aswell as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Trevor and my cousin Derek were in my brothers room drawing spider-man, and listening in by the open door I could hear Trevors critique, saying that he drew one eye bigger than the other. Being a fan of my brother at the time I decided to go and grab some paper and a pencil, determined to produce a spider-man of my own. I gave it a shot and made sure that one eye be bigger than other.
My parents got ahold of my drawings and couldnt believe the detail in them, being so young I didnt understand that what I was doing would be considered unordinary. I figured everybody drew and couldnt tell if I was good or not. Never pushing me they let me be and knew if I kept at it I could develope my small skill.

2009

Struggles with confidence and orginality, lacks focus and direction. Doesnt know where to put in the effort. Has the skills but not the proper tools and guidance. I have many holes in my craft. I am a straight pen and pencil guy, I have only a repetoire of comic book inspired imagery. I need to know more, I need to know how to use my time properly and how to meet a deadline with no questions asked.
I truly believe that ACAD is the place where I can have these questions answered, focus adjusted to where it should be and skills honed and my potential uncovered. I really like the campus and love the city of Calgary. My girl friend attends ACAD and seeing her work excel and the quality of teachers has inspired me to finally make a decision and commit to a college that will be commited to me.
After finishing a four year program I plan on breaking into comics and play the field, sell some ideas and get some published but my real passion is in film. I love writing scripts, and the preproduction process and every detail you have to excrutiate over. Working with a group of people and finding a way to calaborate towards the goal of a singular vision. Art is the door way to that world and I plan on kicking it in half. I will always love drawing and all that comes with it but there is such a wonderful world of cinema out there. I believe in ACADs ability to provide me with the skills and assets to create a career that is up to me to further.
I really do appreciate the opportunity ACAD can offer and will not miss use it. In this day and age creativness is not enough, you need to be technical aswell and Im confident I will find what Im looking for at the college.

Lol, take it easy, what you said was absolutely fine. Everybody has preferences, I enjoy comics more then manga but I still appreciate it because it has taught me a lot of cool stuff. Actually when I was 12 or 13 I loved old anime like THE LENSMEN and other old weird ones. So dont sweat it, and hopefully no more sad moods, take care.
